What do we have here? 'Tis the Smithsonian's Greatest American Post Office! Galena's Post Office is also one of the oldest operating post offices in the United States, having been built in the late 1850s. Hmm, I wonder if the lines here crawl a lot faster than the post office branch in Logan Square.
Nothing says Main Street, USA more than a post office. If this is starting to evoke images of Bedford Falls for ya, it should. Supervised by architect Ammi B. Young, the Custom House and Post Office of Galena, Illinois was built directly from Nauvoo Limestone. Nauvoo, like Galena, being another great Illinois town with a rich history.
I hope to give you a tour of Galena's small town charm in the coming days. Until then, enjoy the days of a bygone era. No, not small mining towns of the 1800s, but postage that once cost peons.

I can get into this one more. That's a sharp building, amazingly with no goofy updates. Very nice.
I guess that's why it wins title of oldest operating, Steven, no goofy updates indeed.
I'm really enjoying the Galena pictures. This is a really picturesque town.
I really enjoyed being there. It is a picture-esque town. For me, it's my Stars Hollow. If you have ever seen the tv show Gilmore Girls, Steven, you'll know what I am referring to.
Never seen Gilmore Girls, but I can kind of understand what you mean.
